matt and i have a desire to help our boys develop a love for nature and being outdoors. i think it is special for kids to get out, explore, and step away from the hustle and bustle. matt and i just like to teach our kids that in different ways! one of the ways matt likes to develop that with our boys is through camping. and i think it is super cute that he likes to do that.
we don't feel like tad is quite at the age where we would enjoy having him out camping yet. he would most likely wander off into the wilderness, hop into a raging river, or sit in a fire pit. so, i stayed in the big city with taddy, while matt and the other boys drove about an hour away from our home, into the san gabriel mountains, to camp. it was a win-win, since camping isn't really my thing, and tad wasn't really wanted needed there.
it was a hot weekend. like, over 100 hot. and there was no water to cool off in. so matt said they found a shady spot and did a lot of whittling in the heat of the day. our boys love whittling away at sticks. (must be a boy thing..?). and holden had just gotten his own pocket knife as an early birthday gift, so he was pretty pumped to try it out.
sidenote: we told holden he would be old enough for a pocket knife when he stopped having tantrums. because he used to be the most heinous of all tantrum throwers, and we hoped it would be a good incentive. and it was. but it still took over a year for him to get that pocket knife. it was a hard earned prize.
other then whittling, they explored, smushed giant black widows, built a fire, cooked food on said fire, burned things with a magnifying glass. you know, things that i am really sad to have missed.. haha.
the boys came home dirty and smelling like they had just rolled in fire pit... and happy. so happy. it probably didn't hurt that matt stopped on the way home and got them ice cream from baskin robbins at 10:00am. such a special getaway with their dad.
